ABOUT DRYERS

Choosing a Dryer
v1000 Speedy Dryer
Our purpose is to help the buyer understand what makes one dryer more efficient or effective than another, and to provide the buyer with the necessary information for asking the kind of questions that will enable a meaningful comparison.

Measuring Airflow
Perhaps the most abused area of confusion in dryer comparisons relates to the question of “airflow.” It is essential that we differentiate between “air speed” and “air volume.” When a dryer’s airflow is given in feet per minute (FPM), it is measuring speed, not volume, and is relatively meaningless. All a manufacturer has to do to increase the speed of the airflow is to narrow the opening. It is possible, therefore, for a dryer rated at 8,000 FPM to actually be producing less air than a dryer rated at 3,000 FPM.

Air volume is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). All air-conditioning equipment, heating equipment, and air-moving equipment is rated in CFM. If all dryer manufacturers used CFM, airflow comparisons would be simple and consistent. When a manufacturer chooses to use FPM ratings, the buyer should insist on a conversion to CFM.
